The communication about your choices as a player versus the consequences issued as a DM is a dialog and, like every dialog, there will be breakdowns in communication if everyone involved doesn’t do their part.
Reflection is an important part of playing tabletop games well whether you play them offline or on and the last few days have found me orbiting my thoughts on experiencing me as a player and how that informs the ways I behave as a DM.
If we’re not expanding the spectrum of games people can play and bettering the conditions under which they are made while we are at it – then let me ask: what the fuck are we doing here? Like there’s no discourse to be had here. Just play what you like and be quiet in a corner somewhere.

There’s a lot of things that have been said about discourse over the last few months and while most of what I’m about to write could easily apply to so many things, these observations are about tabletop games. It was another day inside and on twitter. That day, I popped into a thread on magic in tabletop games and related mechanics with Dee Pennyway. After a pretty solid exchange of ideas, we decided to continue the convo via DM when this happened: I’ve read your blog posts and I like everything I’ve seen… Read more Look, Ma! I’m a Writer!
I’d heard about GenCon for a couple of years thanks to new friends made while being in and on streams. Lots of nerdery and good times to be had. Comics, board games, tabletop games, and good times with friends. It seemed cool and something that I might try in that ever distant “one day”, but… Read more My First GenCon
This entry is going to be heavy in stream-of-consciousness writing. I will try as hard as I can to get keep this readable. The recent revelations of long-standing issues and their impact at Wizards have left us all a bit of a wreck. Partly because we treat companies like people but also because of nostalgia… Read more A Word on WotC
